Mar 2021 18:16:01 +0000 tatianagomez.co https://tatianagomez.co/New-Farmer-s-Almanac-2021 New Farmer's Almanac 2021 Redesign of the fifth volume of the New Farmer’s Almanac for The Greenhorns—land-based non-profit serving young farmers across the United States, while working with the following constraints: the format had the be consistent with previous editions, the publication is printed in a single ink (black), illustrative imagery is either open source or shared by contributors. Known for being a whimsical publication that has a community urgent aspect to it, we designed a graphic system and a typographic treatment that gives it a humanistic look, while making it feel contemporary. The graphic system is designed to fit a variety of voices that coexist in the book. The typography accommodates scientific information and poetry at the same time. The text content of the almanac is contrasted by the visual content that illustrates it.&nbsp; Apart from designing the book, we worked closely with the editor, Briana Olson, curating artistic entries, as well as researching imagery to amplify the content by providing an illustration of the ideas, additional information, or even contrast it through thought-provoking images. The strategy helps local businesses and organizations hit by the pandemic to expand their operations outdoors by providing kits containing traffic barriers, steel panels, and tents. The kits were built by the Steel Yard and intervened by local artists, before being distributed around the city of Providence, Rhode Island.&nbsp; &nbsp; We named and designed a bilingual, friendly branding system that aims to speak to a wider community in Providence. In an effort to make both languages equal in hierarchy within the design, the logo is set in Spanglish, mixing up Spanish and English. Because of the primary use of the logo on different surfaces of the kits, the logo was designed using the stencil typeface Plotter Mono Stencil Std by Typotheque. We also designed three bilingual posters to be distributed with each kit. The print work displayed was developed during the summer of 2020 by the&nbsp;Print Like You Give A Damn Press Collective—at the AS220 Community Printshop,&nbsp;as a reaction to the social unrest and protests happening locally in Providence, but also globally.&nbsp; The show was on view in the fall of 2020 at the Cohen Gallery, at the Brown Arts Initiatives building.&nbsp;For covid restrictions, people couldn’t access the space, so the design needed to be appreciated from the glass windows. In early Western cultures, black clothing was a signifier of authority and also of mourning—and in many situations, remains so today. Black can evoke emotional responses related to mystery, exoticism, and fear and it can also feel chic and sophisticated, eliciting reason to celebrate. All the exhibited garments and accessories are from the Moore College of Art and Design’s Historic Costume Collection, originally bequeathed to the college in 1940 by Lynda Augusta Eckendorf Hering (b.1853 d.1940). This is considered a study collection for students, offering the opportunity to examine construction details and observe silhouettes and textile properties that can provide significant information about cultures that inform design. end of my master’s degree at the Rhode Island School of Design. It is written in Spanish and English and was designed to give both languages the same importance while showcasing a wide range of projects. Through my research, I have used graphic design as a platform for coding and decoding language, shaping and reshaping it. In a world ruled by misunderstanding, I am interested in the moment when design becomes a vital mediator, a translator to a lingua franca that enables criticism, fosters conversations and interactions between people with same or different cultural backgrounds. Lingua Franca stands for a discipline that opens the possibilities for better understanding within communities.
