América ≠ America

A small typographic change, a single glyph that switches from e to é transforms the whole meaning of a word. The word American in English has a specific connotation: it refers to people from the United States of America. In Spanish, we consider the American continent as a whole. When we use the demonym americano or “americana”, we do not make any distinctions in between north, center or south.
I acknowledged this when I arrived to the United States and could not help having a strange feeling. I suddenly did not feel like I belonged to this continent anymore. I stopped being americana and became an alien—from Mars maybe?
This to me is a clear example of language applied to geopolitics, where different cultures appropriate terms and name things depending on their power over other cultures, their backgrounds, their versions of stories. At this point is not that it is right or wrong, but to me it is important to raise awareness about this.

Un pequeño cambio tipográfico, un simple glifo que cambia de e a é transforma profundamente el significado de una palabra. Un nombre propio que a su vez define la identidad de millones de personas. Un sólo glifo, la ausencia de un acento, te roba tu identidad.
La palabra America en inglés se refiere a Estados Unidos. En Español, en cambio, considera el continente americano completo. Crecí en Colombia siendo americana, pero al llegar a Estados Unidos no sólo perdí mi gentilicio sino que se me asignó el de alienígena (¿de Marte, Júpiter tal vez?).
Para mi este es un claro ejemplo del lenguage aplicado a la geopolítica, donde diferentes culturas se apropian de términos y nombran cosas y lugares dependiendo del poder que tienen sobre otras culturas, de sus diferentes historias y perspectivas.
